10 Tips on Cleaning the Bathroom with Vinegar and Baking Soda
With soap and water splattering on various parts of your bathroom, keeping it clean can seem like a daunting task. The problem is further aggravated by nail polish, lipstick, and oil that can linger on the bathroom surfaces. With so many household cleaners to choose from, identifying the right combination can be confusing. You do not necessarily need to use chemicals to make surfaces spotless if you choose to clean the bathroom with vinegar and baking soda. A combination of these alkali and acetic acidic products forms an extremely powerful cleaning agent and here I explain how to use it in your bathroom!
Make the toilet sparkle
No matter how much you clean the toilet, you might still notice an unpleasant ring that appears on the water level, so you need some extra work to get rid of such stains.
Mix one-part lemon juice with two parts borax. Make another solution of one-part vinegar and two parts baking soda. Mix all the ingredients and apply them to the rim of your toilet and scrub it.
If you want to know a pro tip on how to make your bathroom smell good, you should get more vinegar and baking soda to clean the toilet tank too. Because it is closed most of the time, people don’t really realize that it needs to be cleaned from time to time since algae, mold, and rust can build up inside that can cause bad odors and also damage the tank.
First, you need to get the water out of it and fill it with vinegar. For the best result, leave the vinegar in the tank for overnight so it can dissolve all the debris. In the morning, remove the vinegar by flushing it. If there are still rust or mold spots, you can scrub them with a brush and baking soda and when all dirt is gone, fill the tank again with water.
Clean the shower doors
As soap splashes on the shower doors, it leaves stains that can be difficult to clean. To get rid of these stains completely there is no need to use harsh chemicals, you can rely on a good vinegar baking soda cleaner.
Mix ¼ cup of vinegar with ¼ cup of baking soda. Mist the door with this mixture and allow it to soak for a few minutes, then wipe the shower doors with a sponge. If you want to keep your shower doors sparkling at all times, keep part of this solution in a bottle and spray it on the glass as part of your post-shower routine, then just simply swipe away water with a squeegee!
Remove rust stains from the sink
Floor traps and other bathroom appliances are usually made of stainless steel, but you will have to deal with rust from time to time around the bathroom sink for example when leaving metal items, like a tweezer or scissors on it.
Use a solution of ½cup of baking soda and ¾ cup of vinegar with a toothbrush and scrub the rusty spots. This solution will attack the toughest rust stains if you include it in your bathroom cleaning regimen. You can use the same mixture of baking soda and vinegar to clean the sink’s drain when it’s smelling!
Wipe the wall tiles
Frankly, how often do you clean the wall tiles in your bathroom? While we usually wipe the surfaces and mop the floor, most people clean the tiles when doing a deep cleaning only, so there can be some stubborn stains on them, but vinegar and baking soda easily remove these too.
Start by dissolving two cups of salt in four liters of warm water. Add ¼ cup baking soda, one cup of ammonia, and ½ cup of baking soda and let it sit on the dulled surfaces for 15 minutes. This will help not only to eliminate the stains but also to remove bathroom odors and the result will be a spotless, freshly smelling room.
Tip: consider placing some plants in the bathroom that purify the air!
Clean the grout between your tiles
Besides acting as a magnet for dirt, the grouting between your bathroom tiles can harbor germs. Since it’s quite easy to miss it during regular cleaning, you need to give it extra attention.
In addition to being a natural bathroom cleaner, baking soda can get into these crevices and dissolve the redundant scum easily. Take one part borax and two parts baking soda and some warm water. Let the solution sit for around 20 minutes and scrub the grout with a toothbrush.
Remove dirt spots from the ceiling
While cleaning the fixtures and appliances in your bathroom, chances are that you don’t remember the ceiling. Over time, mildew and grime can accumulate in the ceiling and create some ugly spots.
Make a simple natural cleaning solution: fill a bucket with equal parts of water and white vinegar. Protect your eyes with goggles and squeeze the vinegar solution onto the stained areas of your ceiling. Handle one part at a time and repeat until the spots disappear.
Eliminate mildew from the shower curtains
Humid environments are a great refuge for mildew, therefore I recommend making a habit of keeping vinegar for mold in shower areas so you can immediately clean around if you notice some spots. If you don’t have a mildew-resistant shower curtain, this is the surface where you can notice very quickly that black spots start growing. If this happens, you need to wash them off as soon as possible before they get too big and you need to throw away the curtain.
You can choose to wash your shower curtain in the washing machine. Use warm water (not hot!) combined with vinegar or just gentle laundry detergent, or you can do handwashing too. For that, add ½ cup vinegar and ½ cup borax to two cups of water, then pour the solution onto the affected areas. After eight-10 minutes, scrub the curtains with a sponge or cloth. If some mildew remains, dampen a microfiber cloth, sprinkle some baking soda on it, and scrub the spots on the curtain. After scrubbing, rinse the curtain with warm water, then hang it back on the rod and let it dry.
Clean the bathtub properly
After some time, the bathtub can develop a chalky ring that requires special attention. When body oils, soap, and minerals from hard water react, they can form a residue on the water level. Since the bathtub is susceptible to scum, you should sponge it off with baking soda.
Mix one-part baking soda with one-part dishwashing detergent and wipe the affected areas. Detergents and baking soda are critical when it comes to purging the scum since they don’t react with the salts.
Make the showerheads shine
Calcium and other mineral deposits can clog your showerheads if you live in a region with hard water. While doing your bathroom cleaning with vinegar and baking soda, it is easy to treat the clogged showerheads too.
Make a solution of ½ cup of water and ½ cup of vinegar. Remove the showerheads and soak them in the concentrated solution of vinegar and water. For extra cleaning power, heat the solution and add four to five denture tablets.
Disinfect the floor
The floor is the dirtiest surface in the bathroom after the toilet. Hair, soap, toothpaste, and beauty-products residue can bring unpleasant odors along with bacteria and germ, so cleaning the floor needs extra attention. But if you don’t want to use toxic chemical products, your old friends, baking soda and vinegar will help here too that not only clean but also disinfect the surface.
Start by pouring hot water down the floor trap and add four spoons of baking soda. After five minutes, add one cup of boiling water and a cup of vinegar and leave it for ten minutes. This solution will get rid of any unwanted material. Baking soda and vinegar work as non-toxic bathroom deodorizers too so you will get rid of the unpleasant smells too when cleaning the floor using these natural cleaning products.
